Laser Dentistry — Gum Depigmentation, Gummy Smile and Laser Whitening
The laser removes the pigment. The science protects the tissue. Single-session gum treatments by a surgeon trained in laser dentistry at RWTH Aachen University.
Dark gums are the request we hear most from patients of African descent — more often than veneers. Melanin pigmentation of the gums is natural and harmless, but a patient who has invested in a bright smile wants the frame to match. A dental laser removes the pigmented surface layer in one session, with minimal discomfort and, in many cases, without injected anaesthesia.
Laser gum depigmentation (gum bleaching)
- What it does: the laser vaporises the thin pigmented epithelium; the gum heals with its natural pink colour over one to two weeks.
- Session: usually one visit for both arches; patients return to normal eating the same day with simple precautions.
- Durability: results are long-lasting; some repigmentation can occur over years, particularly in smokers, and a short touch-up is possible.
- Timing: performed at the start of a Hollywood Smile stay, so that the gums are healed when the veneers are bonded.
Gummy-smile correction
When too much gum shows above the upper teeth, the cause is diagnosed first: short teeth, excess gum, a hyperactive lip or a vertical jaw pattern. Laser gingivectomy and crown lengthening reshape the gum line in a single session with precise bleeding control; cases driven by the lip are treated with lip repositioning or injectables. Dr. Zarifeh presented this exact topic — laser gummy-smile correction and cosmetic dentistry — in his seminar for the AALZ Aachen Dental Laser Center of RWTH Aachen University.
Laser whitening and more
- Laser-activated whitening for a predictable shade change in one appointment, combined with home protocols where needed.
- Laser-assisted periodontal therapy and frenectomy.
- Laser soft-tissue contouring around implants and before veneers.
The training behind the laser
Dr. Habib Zarifeh holds an MSc in Laser Dentistry from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, has lectured internationally on laser and cosmetic dentistry — Germany, Portugal, the Gulf, Iraq, North Africa — and serves on the organising committee of the 20th ISLD World Congress of the International Society for Laser Dentistry, Dubai, 12–14 November 2026. For a patient, that history matters for one reason: laser settings on gum tissue are a matter of training, not of the machine.
